Supplemental Information
Laser Hair Removal Be sure to take advantage of our new upgraded and powerful Lightsheer™. 100ms Diode Laser System for hair removal. This allows the treatment of a wider range of patients, which includes patients with darker skin tones (Skin type IV-VI). Pre and Post Treatment Instructions For LightSheerTM Laser Patients (pdf file). Now there is a better solution for unwanted hair... As a woman, you may be surprised to learn that just about your entire body is covered with hair. Because most of this hair is fine and pale, it usually isn't visible to the naked eye. In fact, you may be surprised to know that the largest number of hair follicles is actually on your forehead. But when darker, coarser hair appears in places we don't like or expect--like on the face, neck, abdomen, breasts or arms--or prevents us from wearing a high-cut bathing suit, shorts, or even a short skirt, it may be time to consider hair removal with the LightSheer™ Diode Laser. Understanding hair removal In the past, the usual remedies for unwanted hair were plucking, shaving, waxing, or chemical depilatories. Some are painful, some are messy, and all are only temporary. For long-term hair removal, electrolysis is popular and effective but can be painful and slow. Hair by hair, an electric current passes through the needle to destroy the hair root's ability to grow. It typically takes months or even years of regular visits--even for small areas, like the upper lip. Risks include electrical shock, infection, and pitting or scarring. Now there's a more effective solution, the new LightSheer Diode Laser, a state-of-the-art system specially designed to remove unwanted hair faster, less painfully, and more reliably than electrolysis. Understanding laser treatment A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. Different types of lasers produce different colors of light. The color of light produced by a particular laser is the key to its effect on hair follicles. The light emitted by the LightSheer Diode Laser is absorbed by the pigment located in hair follicles. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the pigment, disabling several follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair's regrowth. Importantly, LightSheer's special contact-cooling hand-piece is perfect for a woman's sensitive skin. It directs the laser energy to the hair root while protecting and cooling the surrounding skin. What you can expect The length of a laser session may be a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated. Because the laser tends to treat hair follicles that are in an active growth phase, more than one treatment may be required to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter this growth phase. Laser treatment itself may cause a slight tingling sensation. Most patients tolerate the procedure well. But because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, topical anesthesia is always available. The appearance of the treated area immediately after a laser session will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of the treatment and skin type. Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling, which disappear in a short time. Most people return to normal activity right away. We will be happy to tell you more about your treatment and what you can expect during your consultation. We're here to help LightSheer™ Diode Laser--the world's most advanced treatment for effective removal of unwanted hair. Great news for men and women who want to get rid of excess hair. Depending on your needs, most body areas can be treated with this state-of-the-art technology. Ask us about the LightSheer Diode Laser and how we can use it to remove unwanted hair. Information for Patients About Laser Hair Removal Using the LightSheer™ Laser

LightSheer treatment is fast, gentle, and precise. Treatments that might span months or even years with electrolysis or electrothermolysis take a few short visits with the LightSheer Diode Laser.

We Can Treat Both Women and Men.

Why Are WE Offering This Service?

We have has so many requests from patients that we decided to research this technique and found the LightSheer Laser is a state-of-the-art machine with very high patient satisfaction. People are happy with their results! Different from other machines on the market, the LightSheer is a laser, making it more effective, but also requiring physician supervision. Salons and other day spas cannot use the laser without physician supervision. You can only receive treatment under the care of a doctor.

How Does the LightSheer™ Laser Work?

The laser emits light at a specific wavelength that selectively destroys the hair follicle. A cooling tip on the laser protects the skin from injury. No creams or any other substances need to be applied to the skin before treatment, as with some other hair removal methods.

Treatments are given four to six weeks apart, in order to destroy hairs that were in a resting stage during previous treatments. Patients generally require between three and five treatments, after which 80 to 90 percent of the hair will not regrow. Any regrowth that occurs is typically finer and lighter.

While all skin types can be treated effectively, the LightSheer™ works best on dark hair on light skinned patients.

Is It Safe?

The cooling tip on the laser is patented and protects the skin from injury. The LightSheer™ Laser is safe to use on any area of the body, except very close to the eyes. Goggles are worn during treatment to protect the eyes.

Scarring of the skin was not observed in a large clinical study. However, sometimes patients may experience redness or slight swelling, which goes away within 24 to 48 hours. Although there seems to be no scarring, scarring may occur rarely after any skin treatment.

Patients who are prone to cold sores (herpes) on the area to be treated should notify us. Valtrex or Zovirax can be prescribed and should be taken prior and post treatment to avoid an occurrence.

Occasionally patients experience skin pigmentation changes in the treated area. These changes are temporary.

Which Patients Should Not Undergo Laser Hair Removal?

Patients using medication that requires limited exposure to sunlight or other light (i.e. Tetracycline, Retin A) should not undergo treatment or subside from the medication for a period of time directed by the physician and then after the Laser treatment return to the medication. Patients suffering from Diabetes or any immuno-compromised condition should not undergo treatment.

While LightSheer™ is considered safe in pregnancy, we do suggest you consult with your Ob/Gyn.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

That depends on the size of the area to be treated. The upper lip takes only a few minutes, while the underarms take 10 to 15 minutes and the bikini line takes 30 minutes or more. Legs and thighs obviously take significantly more time; therefore several sessions will be needed for upper and lower leg treatment.

Does It Hurt?

Patients may feel slight discomfort, but little, if any, pain. Some areas of the body tend to be more sensitive than others, and you may experience a tingling sensation. Topical anesthesia can be used; however, most patients do not require it. Although anesthesia is not required, arrangements can be made to prescribe EMLA Cream, which can be applied by the patient up to two hours before treatment to minimize any discomfort.

Sometimes, patients may experience some redness or slight swelling of the treated area for approximately 24 hours.

What Steps Should I Take Before My Treatment?

Prior to and after all laser treatments, patients should avoid tanning the area to be treated or should wear 30 SPF sunscreen. This will improve the overall effectiveness of each treatment.

Patients cannot wax, bleach, tweeze, pluck, or undergo electrolysis for at least three to six weeks before treatment. However, shaving is OK and cream depilatories (Nair) can also be used. If using depilatory creams, do not use them for at least four days prior to treatment. Remember, if the hair is not present in the follicle (beneath the skin) during the treatment, it will not be affected. You will be asked to shave immediately prior to treatment.
