- Osteoporosis
What you don't know about osteoporosis can hurt you. This condition affects millions of women over 40 years of age. Osteoporosis is silently responsible for hip fractures, wrist fractures, and spinal fractures leading to severe back pain, disability and occasionally death. Twenty percent of women will develop a hip fracture by the age of 90. Twenty percent of those patents will die in one year. The rest are frequently disabled. Osteoporosis is a condition, which slowly progresses without you knowing about it. Thin, white women who smoke cigarettes are at an especially increased risk. Also, women who have a family history of hip fracture, and those taking steroid medication, or thyroid medication are also at higher risk. Women who have had a hysterectomy and have had the ovaries removed are at a higher risk of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition where the bones lose their calcium stores and eventually become weak and brittle. Once osteoporosis is present the bones are more susceptible to fracturing. The most common areas for fracture are the hip bone and the spinal vertebrae. A woman's skeletal system develops a peak bone density at age 30. From this point on the bones lose calcium. It has been recently discovered that some women in their mid 20s were found to have severe osteoporosis. These women were serious athletes who have low body fat content, were on strict low-fat diets, avoided dairy products, and drank abundance of diet sodas. It is important to know your bone density, because if it is low you can improve it by taking calcium, exercising, and maintaining a proper estrogen level. A simple, painless two-minute test will immediately tell you if you are suffering from osteoporosis or if you are at high risk for developing it. We utilize a brand new bone scan machine known as Accudex. It uses state-of-the-art technology known as DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) to determine the density of your bone. The test uses a low-dose X-ray (much less than a dental X-ray).
Please take advantage of this simple test and take a big step in your preventive health care.
weight loss programs
Our office is embarking on several new services, which may benefit patients. We have been interested in weight management for our patients in the past eight years. We believe in the healthy approach of proper nutrition, exercise, and occasionally vitamins, minerals, and meal supplements when necessary. We prefer not to use medication as first line treatment.
I have recently expanded our services by purchasing a computerized program which inputs data regarding height, weight, exercise, body fat percentage (calibrated by electrical impedance) and ultimately generates a customized meal plan for the patient to follow in order to reduce or gain weight as appropriate for the patient.
Candidates for this program would include patients who are obese or thin. In addition, patients suffering diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, sleep apnea would be ideal candidates and in come cases insurance will cover the cost for services.
Vitamin and herbal nutritional counseling
The time has come for people to seriously consider their nutritional health. Preventive medicine and nutritional supplements are now available, which may render our bodies more resistant to illness and disease and improve health and vitality. As a physician, I have attended courses and lectures on the benefits of vitamins, minerals, fiber, etc. I have personally been taking multivitamins, minerals and herbal supplements for over seven years.
I believe that the best way to guard yourself against disease is through proper nutrition, exercise and taking appropriate doses of balanced vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. There are many studies, which demonstrate the benefits of vitamin and mineral preparations. Clinician's Choice Vitamin supplements are designed by physicians and scientists to provide high quality vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients with a focus on enhanced absorption for better nutritional value. Please feel free to discuss these issues with me as an important part of your annual or well-woman check-up.
